As I drove home the other day, I got a cold chill. So I closed the window. My mind started wandering, thinking about the days activities and it struck me that I have one domain controller for the entire network. After going through a complete OMG moment and what happens if scenario in my head, i knew I had to come up with something.
The thing is, I have redundancy on the hardware, internet connections, DNS, databases... the list goes on, but I had overlooked something that, really, would have screwed me completely.
So this morning, I setup a new Virtual Machine, running on my IT server. I had considered using one of the existing servers but I really dont want it running on my SQL box, nor is it recommended to run it on my exchange server.
After a quick review of the process, I setup the secondary DC & Global Catalog. All appears to be syncing well and no errors in the logs. Just so that I didnt forget anything and as a mental reminder, the Petri Knowledgebase
has a great walkthrough to prompt you to the process.
Could something have actually gone right this week... mmmm... I wonder...Update
: Also added secondary DNS on the second DC. Great walkthrough here; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816518
